Exploring Batik History by visiting Ullen Sentalu, Museum Batik Yogyakarta


Ullen Sentalu founded in 1994 and later formalized by KGPAA Pakualam VIII in 1997. As one of the Batik Museum in Yogyakarta, which is famous for its exclusiveness, this museum is very feasible for visiting during your trip in Yogyakarta beside visiting Sultan Palace. Initially batik museum was initiated by a very rich indeed named Haryono who very concerned about the existence of Batik as an Indonesian cultural heritage, especially of Javanese culture. Ulen Sentalu located in the highland area named Kaliurang about 25 km from Yogyakarta. In this 11,990 m2 area a museum that contains various types of batik worn hundreds of years ago by the king and his family saved. When visiting you can also see a collection of paintings and photographs – family photos of Sultan which you might not see elsewhere.

By purchasing tickets at the front counter a local guide will accompany you to learn in detail of the Kingdom Yogyakarta’s history including all property, batik collection owned by Sultan’s Family. After walking down the hallway for approximately 40-50 minutes you will be treated with traditional Javanese typical drink in the resort of visitors, and then you will be given free time to round Ullen Sentalu batik museum. The following are profiles of some rooms of museum that you will see:

Guest Room

This room is used for welcoming to the guests after purchased the ticket. Here also you will see a statue of “Dewi Sri” as a symbolism of fertility.

Dance and Gamelan Room

Inside this room you will see a set of tools ancient gamelan (traditional Javanese musical instruments), which was a gift from one of the princes of Sultan Palace.

Guwa Sela Giri

Guwa Sela Giri is a room that was built underground and designed with exposed brick and incorporating elements of Javanese architecture. The existence of this room is to adjust the contour of uneven ground. In this room you will see the works – paintings of documentation 4 Palace of Mataram dynasty.

Kampung Kambang

Kampung Kambang is an area that is built above the pond and consists of a poem to Tineke Room, Royal Room Ratoe Mas, Batik Vorstendlanden Room, Coastal Batik Room, and Quest Princess Room.
